A recent study revealed that chess classes may bolster intellect but do not necessarily boost a child’s overall academic performance.
Conducted by the Education Endowment Foundation, the study charted the progress of 3,000 primary school students in England to determine whether or not participation in a chess program improved their test scores in math subjects. The students, whose ages ranged from 9 to 10 years old, took part in more than 30 hours of chess lessons over a school year.
Even though most of the students said that they enjoyed taking part in the chess classes, data shows that the experience had no impact on their exam scores when compared to other children who did not receive chess instruction.
Educators commenting on the study say that while chess likely helps to cultivate raw intelligence within a child, chess classes do not appear to have a direct impact on the child’s actual performance in the classroom.
Regardless, one-third of students who took part in the study report that they still play chess at least once a week.
