Steve Kanzer, the chairman and CEO of New York-based venture capital group Accredited Ventures, Inc., has been working in finance for more than two decades. A graduate of the New York University School of Law, Steve Kanzer was a Baruch Scholar while completing his undergraduate studies at Baruch College.
Baruch Scholars, which admits first-year students, is just one of the scholar groups overseen by the Baruch Honors program. This program prepares students to be engaged citizens and critical thinkers and promotes academic excellence. To this end, the program requires all of its scholars to complete at least 53 hours of community service while an undergraduate. During freshman year, scholars are expected to complete eight hours of community service. This increases to 15 hours each year for the last three years of school, unless students are studying abroad. Scholars who are abroad only have to complete eight hours of service for that year.
By expecting scholars to complete community service, the Baruch Honors program encourages active involvement in the community. Students participate in various organizations approved by the program over long periods of time, thus helping them build relationships with charitable organizations and learn more about the work each group does. In addition to recognizing direct charitable work, the program also recognizes charitable activity done through many student clubs and religious organizations. However, involvement such as a leadership role at a club is not counted toward a scholar’s required community service.
